The Tortuga* Trail is a pedestrian pathway running through the middle of the original Sunrise/Fairfield community. It was built nearly 40 years ago and had fallen into disrepair on both ends. During 2013-2014, SNAP repaired and revitalized the Trail to encourage its use for fitness, social contacts and appreciation of our desert environment. Nature walks and group outings provide further educational and recreational opportunities for current and future residents. *Spanish word for turtle and Native American symbol for wisdom and longevity.
Spring 2014 marked the official Tortuga Trail dedication — a memorable ceremony with dignitaries and community leaders in attendance, “old favorites” of trail music, a discussion of native vegetation, pedometers from Walgreens for attendees and a group walk along the Trail. Botanical signage identifies a variety of plants along the Trail. The revitalized Trail adds value to community residents’ lives and all who live in the SNAP service area.
